Why did we choose to start with New Zealand Rabbits? Well, there a quite a few reasons!
First is they make a great dual-purpose rabbit. You can raise them for pets or for harvesting for food. Their bone to meat ratio is really good, so that by 8-12 weeks of age they are ready for harvesting. When a NZ is full grown, they can reach 9-12 pounds! Usually at culling time they weigh around 5-6 pounds. They are a fairly large rabbit! Second, these rabbits come in a variety of colors, so their pelts are really nice for tanning, and repurposing into projects, such as hats, blankets. Rabbit fur is a lot warmer than wool! Overall New Zealand rabbits are pretty low maintenance, and super friendly (the more you handle your pet the friendlier they are) Here at our farm all of our rabbits are offered for sale at 8 weeks of age per NY State law and are offered for pet or meat rabbit purposes.
